On July 20, 1969, Buzz Aldrin wore an Omega Speedmaster Professional on his wrist as he stepped onto the lunar surface. It is the only watch ever worn on the moon, and it earned that position not through marketing, but by surviving NASA's brutal qualification testing when everything else failed.

The Qualification Story

In 1965, NASA tested three watches against eleven grueling criteria: temperature extremes, pressure differentials, shock resistance, magnetic fields, humidity, and more. The Speedmaster Professional passed every test. The Rolex and Longines entries failed. It was not close.

The Speedmaster's manually wound caliber was engineered to survive conditions that render electronic systems useless. The hesalite crystal is selected for specific optical properties, not just scratch resistance.

Which Speedmaster?

The definitive piece remains the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional — 42mm, manual wind, hesalite crystal, Caliber 3861. It looks almost identical to the watch worn in 1969 and is deliberately so.

In the vintage segment, the pre-moon references — the 2915, 105.002, and 105.012 (each worn on different Apollo missions) — are genuine horological artifacts. Prices have risen significantly, but they remain more accessible than equivalent vintage Rolexes.

The Value Case

The Speedmaster occupies an unusual position: a watch with unimpeachable historical credentials, world-class manufacturing, and a fascinating complication (the chronograph), available at retail prices that seem modest relative to comparable Swiss offerings.

A new Moonwatch retails for approximately $6,500. A comparable Rolex Daytona retails for $16,100 and carries a multi-year wait list. The Speedmaster offers, arguably, more interesting watchmaking for less than half the price.

More collectors have entered serious watch collecting through the Speedmaster than through almost any other reference. It is a watch that rewards study, offers genuine history, and wears extraordinarily well across every context. We recommend it enthusiastically as both a first luxury purchase and as a serious collection addition.
