Water resistance ratings on watches are among the most misunderstood specifications in horology. A watch rated to 30 metres cannot safely be submerged 30 metres — and understanding why that is true can prevent expensive damage.
How Water Resistance Is Tested
Manufacturers test water resistance using static pressure in a controlled environment. Real-world water exposure is dynamic: a hand entering water creates pressure spikes far exceeding the static depth equivalent. A 30m static rating corresponds roughly to splashing and rain — not swimming. This gap between rated and practical resistance explains the majority of water damage claims.
What the Ratings Actually Mean
30m / 3 ATM: Splash-proof only. Handles rain and hand washing. Not suitable for swimming. 50m / 5 ATM: Light swimming in calm conditions only. 100m / 10 ATM: Swimming and snorkeling, but not scuba diving. 200m / 20 ATM: Recreational scuba diving and most watersports — the standard for the Omega Seamaster 300M, Rolex Submariner, and Tudor Black Bay. 300m+ / 30 ATM+: Professional dive instruments. The Rolex Sea-Dweller is rated to 1,220m; the Deepsea to 3,900m.
The Gasket Problem
Water resistance is not permanent. Crown gaskets and caseback gaskets harden and crack over time, degrading the seal regardless of original ratings. A watch tested to 200m at the factory may not maintain that standard after five years without service. Any watch worn in water should have its water resistance tested annually by a watchmaker — it costs under $50 and can prevent a four-figure repair bill.
The Screw-Down Crown
The single most important water resistance feature is a screw-down crown. When the crown is unscrewed to set the time and not properly re-secured, any water resistance claim is void. This is the most common cause of water damage in watches rated to 100m or more. Always confirm the crown is locked before any water exposure — always.
