Straight About What We Pay, and What We Don’t

Bullion is the easiest thing in this business to price honestly, because there is nothing to argue about. A one-ounce Gold Eagle contains one ounce of gold. The market publishes what an ounce is worth every second of every trading day. Weight times purity times spot — and you can see the spot figure at the top of this page before you get in the car.

That is the whole of it. No opinion about condition, no view on whether the design is fashionable, no room for a number pulled out of the air.

And the part most buyers leave out.

We pay metal content. For bullion that is the right price and you lose nothing — Eagles and Krugerrands trade on their gold everywhere, so melt is the market.

For a genuinely rare or graded coin it is the wrong price. A scarce date, a key mintmark, a high-grade slab — those can be worth several times their metal, and that premium is a numismatist’s trade, not ours. If something in your lot looks like one, we will tell you and send you to a specialist. You will get more from them than from us, and we would rather you did than have you find out afterwards.

Gross Weight Is Not Gold Weight

A one-ounce American Gold Eagle weighs about 1.09 troy ounces on a scale, because it is alloyed with copper and silver for hardness. It still contains exactly one ounce of gold, and that is what it is priced on. Confusing the two is how people get short-changed — in either direction.

Common bullion coins, by actual gold content
CoinFinenessGold content (1 oz coin)
American Gold Eagle.9167 (22k)1.0000 oz
South African Krugerrand.9167 (22k)1.0000 oz
American Gold Buffalo.99991.0000 oz
Canadian Maple Leaf.99991.0000 oz
Austrian Philharmonic.99991.0000 oz
British Britannia (2013+).99991.0000 oz

All six contain the same ounce of gold. The Eagle and the Krugerrand simply weigh more in the hand. Anyone quoting an Eagle on its gross weight is either confused or counting on you being.

Anything collectible set aside
If a coin is worth more to a numismatist than to us, it comes out of the pile and we tell you why rather than quietly buying it at melt.

Selling Bullion in San Antonio

What bullion do you buy in San Antonio?
Gold, silver and platinum in coin, bar and round form. The common sovereign coins — American Gold Eagle, American Buffalo, South African Krugerrand, Canadian Maple Leaf, Austrian Philharmonic, British Britannia — plus American Silver Eagles, generic rounds, and bars from any recognised refiner such as PAMP, Valcambi, Perth Mint, Credit Suisse or Engelhard. Sterling flatware and scrap silver too.
Do you pay collector value on rare coins, or just melt?
We pay metal content. For bullion that is the correct price — an American Eagle is bought and sold on its gold content everywhere, so nothing is lost. For a genuinely rare or graded coin it is not: a scarce date or a high-grade slab can be worth a multiple of its metal, and that value belongs to a numismatic specialist rather than to us. If we see one we will say so and tell you to take it elsewhere. You will get more, and we would rather you did.
Why does a 1 oz Gold Eagle weigh more than one ounce?
Because it contains one full troy ounce of gold, plus copper and silver for hardness. The coin weighs about 1.0909 troy ounces gross but its gold content is exactly 1.0000 oz, and that is what it is priced on. A Krugerrand works the same way. Canadian Maple Leafs, Buffalos and Philharmonics are .9999 fine, so their gross and gold weights are effectively the same. Anyone quoting you on gross weight for an Eagle is either confused or hoping you are.
How close to spot do you pay for bullion?
Closer than a pawn shop and closer than a jewelry store, because bullion is liquid and carries no authentication risk once tested. The live spot price is published at the top of this page, so you can check our arithmetic before you arrive rather than afterwards. Bring the quantity you have and we will quote against the market you can see.
Do you test bullion, and can I watch?
Yes to both. Every piece is XRF tested and weighed on a calibrated scale on the counter in front of you. Counterfeit bars and coins do exist, so testing protects both of us — and for you it means the offer is based on what the metal actually is rather than on what the stamp claims.
Do you buy silver bullion as well as gold?
Yes. Silver Eagles, generic rounds, 10 oz and 100 oz bars, junk silver (pre-1965 US dimes, quarters and halves at 90% silver), and sterling flatware. Silver is bulky relative to its value, so for larger quantities it is worth calling ahead on (210) 983-0096 so we have the cash on hand for the amount you are bringing.
