The counterfeit watch industry generates billions annually and employs the same precision manufacturing equipment used by legitimate brands. In 2026, a well-made fake can fool even experienced eyes at a glance. It cannot fool a trained watchmaker with a loupe and five minutes.

These are the five checks our authentication team runs on every pre-owned piece that comes through our doors.

1. The Case Finishing Transitions

Luxury watches use two types of surface finishing: brushed and polished. The transition between these surfaces on a genuine piece is a razor-sharp line. On counterfeits, this transition is almost always compromised — slightly blurred, slightly rounded, or inconsistently applied. Examine the case lugs under raking light.

2. The Crown and Winding Mechanism

Unscrew the crown (a legitimate seller should permit this). It should unthread smoothly, with consistent resistance. On a genuine piece, winding is smooth with a slight ratcheting feel. The crown logo should be crisp and deeply engraved. Many fakes use inferior crown gaskets that feel loose or wobbly.

3. The Dial Application

Applied indices on high-end watches are individually placed pieces of metal — not printed. Look under magnification: they should be perfectly uniform in height, precisely perpendicular to the dial, and have clean, sharp edges. Printing cannot replicate this. If the indices look painted, they are.

4. The Caseback

Most sports watches have solid casebacks. Be suspicious of any sports watch with an unexpected exhibition caseback — counterfeiters add these to show a Chinese movement that looks legitimate at a glance. If the reference did not come from the factory with a display back, investigate aggressively.

5. Weight and Material Feel

Premium watch cases are made from high-grade steel, titanium, gold, or platinum. Genuine Rolex 904L steel is notably heavier than the 316L used in most counterfeits. Hold the watch in your palm. Does it feel substantial? Your palm is a remarkably sensitive instrument — trust it.

At Watch Affinity, authentication is not a cursory check. Every pre-owned piece we sell has been disassembled, movement-inspected, and cleared by our watchmakers before reaching our floor.
