The pre-owned luxury watch market entered 2026 in a state of rational maturity. The COVID-era speculative bubble — which saw some references trade at 300% of retail — has fully deflated, and that is broadly a good thing for real collectors.
What Came Down
The most dramatic corrections have been in the flippable sports references that dominated market headlines from 2021 to 2023. The Rolex Submariner 116610LN, which briefly touched $18,000 on the secondary market, now trades comfortably in the $11,000–$13,000 range — still well above its $8,500 retail price, but no longer the speculative vehicle it once was.
The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 has settled from its peak near $200,000 back toward $80,000–$90,000 for clean examples with box and papers. Still extraordinary for a $34,000 retail piece, but a 55% correction for those who bought at the top.
What Is Holding — and Rising
Complicated pieces and vintage references have proven remarkably resilient. Patek Philippe perpetual calendars and minute repeaters have seen minimal correction — the collector demand for these pieces is driven by connoisseurship rather than speculation.
In the vintage segment, pre-1970 Rolex Daytonas with tropical dials, early Omega Speedmaster references, and tool watches with original unpolished cases continue to attract aggressive bidding. Buyers in this segment are buying objects, not financial instruments.
Emerging Opportunities
Three segments look compelling heading into Q2 2026:
1. Omega on the dip. The Seamaster 300M and Speedmaster have both corrected modestly. For a buyer who wants an exceptional watch at a fair price, current entry points are excellent.
2. Entry-level AP. The Royal Oak Offshore is seeing renewed interest from younger collectors who appreciate its bolder proportions. Prices are rational.
3. Underrated brands. Zenith El Primero references, IWC Mark series, and Longines Heritage pieces are quietly delivering exceptional horological value at approachable prices.
Our Outlook
The market has found its floor. Serious collectors are buying with confidence, and the speculative traders have largely moved on. For those who buy watches to wear, this is the best market in five years. Condition and documentation remain paramount — a clean full-set reference in unworn condition commands a significant premium over a well-worn example, and that gap is widening.
