Not all luxury watches depreciate equally — some hold value with remarkable consistency, and a few regularly appreciate over time. Understanding why certain brands maintain their secondary market position helps collectors make smarter decisions.

The First Tier: Exceptional Value Retention

Rolex is the benchmark. Production is genuinely limited relative to demand, quality control is meticulous, and the brand has been building cultural significance for over a century. Sporting steel references — Submariner, GMT-Master II, Daytona — regularly trade at or above retail. The correction from 2022 peak prices has been measured, and the floor is well-established by genuine collector demand rather than speculation.

Patek Philippe produces approximately 62,000 watches per year — less than one-tenth of Rolex's output. The manufacturer is independent, family-owned, and has never compromised quality for volume. Grand complications have seen virtually no correction through market cycles. The Nautilus 5711 appreciated over 300% in the decade before its discontinuation.

Audemars Piguet rounds out the top tier. The Royal Oak is a design icon with production constrained by genuine manufacturing capacity. The 39mm Jumbo (ref. 15202) and the 15500ST maintain strong secondary market positions. AP has executed brand positioning exceptionally well over the past decade.

The Second Tier: Solid Value Retention

Omega, IWC, and Breitling occupy a reliable second tier. These watches depreciate less than fashion watches or mass-luxury brands, but not as consistently as Rolex or Patek. Pre-owned examples typically sell at 15-35% below retail after the first year. The exception is highly specific vintage references — early Speedmasters, vintage Navitimers, and IWC Mark series watches regularly trade at premiums to comparable modern pieces.

What Drives Value Retention

Four factors determine whether a watch holds value: production scarcity, brand independence, design longevity, and condition with documentation. The last factor is the most controllable: buy the right reference in the best possible condition with complete papers, and you own the most important variable in long-term value.
